In the UK, where badgers are believed to have resided for more than 300,000 years, the Protection of Badgers Act 1992 and schedule 6 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 both seek safeguard their future. Their name is believed to be a derivative of ‘bêcheur’, French for ‘digger’, and a badger's sett is a complex tunnel system, with a number of different chambers and multiple entrances, that can be centuries old.
