Edwardian Australia Southern Cross Brooch ANTIQUE
Beautiful Southern Cross Federation brooch, made to celebrate Australia's Federation, which took place on 1 January 1901. A collectible piece of antique Australiana jewellery. 9k gold and set with amethysts. The Southern Cross is the star constellation seen on the Australian flag. Made by Johnson & Simonsen Jewellers, Swanston Street, Melbourne. (1895-1914).
AGE: Victorian (or Edwardian if made post Federation).
CONDITION: Generally good.
DEFECTS: There are some chips to three of the amethysts (see photos), my personal opinion is that they are not serious, large or deep enough to detract from the beauty of this piece.
FASTENING: Rollover, good operation.
MAKER’S MARK/HALLMARK: The Johnson & Simonsen Jewellers' Square & Compass, 9 (for 9ct gold) and a wheat bundle.
MATERIAL: 9ct gold and amethyst.
SIZE: 1 5/8” (40mm) length: 1 1/4” (32mm) height: largest amethysts measure 5mm diameter.
